Vera Lotar-Shevchenko International Piano Competition will take place in Novosibirsk, December 1 — 14, 2006. The Jury will be composed of well-known musicians from Russia and France

  1. The Application Procedure

  2. 1.1 Vera Lotar-Shevchenko International Piano Competition is open to pianists of all nationalities not younger than 23 years old (as of December 1, 2006) who have completed a professional musical education. There is no upper age limit.
    1.2 To take part in the qualifying round of the Competition, applicants must complete and submit the attached application. Applications must have been postmarked by August, 2006 to be considered.
    Please submit applications to the following address: Vera Lotar-Shevchenko International Piano Competition Organizing Commitee Bolshaya Polyanka Street, 23, bldg. 3 119180 Moscow Russia The application must include: a) Two 13×18 cm. (5×7 ins.) and one 4×6 cm. (1.6×2.3 ins.) glossy photographs. The applicant's first and last name should be written on the back of the photographs. Please do not attach the photographs using pins or staples. b) A photocopy of the applicant's passport or another official form of identification that confirms the applicant's date of birth c) A videotape meeting the following requirements:
    —the recording must be of excellent, preferably professional quality,
    — recording duration shall be up to 35 minutes in length,
    — the recording must contain only the following works for solo piano:
    • a sonata by Mozart or Haydn,
    • a virtuoso etude by Chopin or Liszt,
    • a composition by Ravel or Debussy.
    — editing the videotape in any way is forbidden,
    — the videotape should be in VHS format, recorded in PAL/SECAM or NTSC systems,
    — the recording should be clearly labelled, bearing the applicant's first and last names, the titles of the compositions in the order they were recorded, exact duration of each work, and the date when the videotape was recorded.

    To take part in the qualifying round of the Youth Competition the applicant a recital of a composition from 1 or 2 round not more than 20 minutes
    1.3 A registration fee of $100 shall be paid in cash by applicants invited to appear at the Competition. Applicants must pay the fee in roubles, according to the exchange rate established by the Central Bank of Russia on the day of registration.
    1.4 The decision regarding the admission to participation in the Competition shall be drawn on the basis of the videotaped submissions. The steering committee shall inform the applicants about this decision not later than August, 2006.
    1.5 All applicants who are chosen to appear at the Competition will receive an official invitation from the organizers of the Competition, indicating the date that they should arrive in Moscow.
    1.6 Any changes to an applicant's submitted programmer must be communicated to the steering committee not later than March 1, 2005 and are subject to approval. After March 1, 2005, changes to submitted programmers will be allowed only in exceptional cases, subject to the approval by the Jury.
    1.7 Should an applicant withdraw from the Competition, the documents, videotape, and registration fee shall not be returned.

  3. The Competition Procedure:

  4. 2.1 The Youth Competion will consist of two rounds: two solo recitals. Six semi-finalists shall advance to the Second round.
    2.2 The Competition will consist of three rounds: two solo recitals and a final performance with orchestral accompaniment All rounds will be open to the public. Applicants shall perform all compositions from memory.
    2.3 Twelve semi-finalists shall advance to the Second round, six of whom shall advance to the final round.
    2.4 The order in which participants appear shall be determined by drawing lots, and will remain in effect until the end of the final round.
    All participants must be present at the drawing, which will take place on the eve of the first day of the Competition. The drawing will be followed by an informational meeting that is compulsory for all participants.
    2.5 All participants must remain in Novosibirsk during their participation in the Competition.
    2.6 Winners of the Competition are obligated to perform in the closing concert of the Competition without financial compensation.
    2.7 Participants of the Competition will not receive financial compensation for their appearances during the Competition, nor will they receive financial compensation for any use of recordings or video broadcasts of their appearances. The organizers of the Competition will retain the rights to all audio and video recordings of the Competition proceedings, as well as the right to broadcast them.
    • The Competition will open on December 1, 2006.
    • The final round of the Competition will take place December , 2006 . Upon the end of the final performance, the Jury will determine the distribution of the prizes on the basis of the participants' performances during all the three rounds.
    • The closing concert and award ceremony will take place on December 26, 2006.

  5. Financial Terms

  6. 3.1 Participants in the Competition must arrive in Moscow according to the dates indicated by the organizers of the Competition in the official invitation.
    3.2 Once a foreign participant receives an official invitation to appear, he/she should apply to a Russian consulate for a visa.
    3.3 Each participant will be provided with board and lodging free of charge, beginning on the day indicated in the official invitation to appear.
    Participants who do not advance to the second round may continue to stay in the hotel free of charge for 2 days after the end of the first round.
    Participants who do not advance to the final round may continue to stay in the hotel free of charge until the end of the Competition.
    3.4 Participants will have access to practice rooms for at least 5 hours per day, and have the right to one rehearsal in the performance hall before each round.
    3.5 The organizers of the Competition will not provide any form of insurance to the participants.
    3.6 Signed applications for consideration represent the applicant's acceptance of all conditions listed in this document.

  7. Prizes

  8. 4.1 The Organizing Committee for the Vera Lotar-Shevchenko International Piano Competition announces:
    • FIRST PRIZE in the Youth Competion USD 1500.
    • SECOND PRIZE in the Youth Competion USD 1200.
    • THIRD PRIZE in the Youth Competion USD 1000.
    • THE FIRST PRIZE USD 10 000.
    • SECOND PRIZE USD 7 500.
    • THIRD PRIZE USD 5 000.

    4.2 The Jury has the option to divide the prizes between performers ex-aequo or to declare void any of them.
    4.3 The decisions of the Jury are not subject to any review.
    4.4 The prize money to the Competition laureates will be paid in Russian roubles equivalent in accordance with the exchange rate of the Central Bank of Russia on the date of payment with the income tax deduction.
    4.5 In the event of a controversy over the present Rules for the Sviatoslav Richter International Piano Competition, the Russian version will be considered as the only valid one.

Repertoire

Participants may perform compositions recorded on the preselection videotape. Only published works may be performed at the Competition

First Round of the Youth Competition

Total duration 20 minutes

  1. Any One Prelude and Fuga by Bach, Taneev, Shostakovich
  2. One Etude by Cherni , op. 740
  3. Any One Etude by Chopin, Lizst, Skryabin, Rachmaninov
  4. One composition of a French composer of IXI or XX century

Second Round of the Youth Competition

Total duration 30 minutes

  1. Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert — classic sonata, part 1 
  2. romantic composition the western european composer
  3. a composition written after 1960 by the native applicant's

First round of the Competition

  • Total duration: 40–45 minutes, inducing pauses.
  • The programme and its design will be freely determined by the participant and must consist of works in various styles, including important works of the piano repertoire.
  • Participants may not perform works of their own composition

Second round of the Competition

  • Total duration: 55–60 minutes, inducing pauses. (Contestant may choose to make a break of 3–5 minutes within the performance).
  • The program must consist of compositions in various styles and from various periods, including two large-scale works or one large-scale and one shorter composition (meaning, for instance, a Chopin Ballade or a Liszt Rhapsody), and one work composed after 1960.
  • Participants may perform works of their own composition.
  • Participants may not perform works performed during the first round of the Competition

Third Round. Final

The finalists shall perform successively two concertos for piano and orchestra, one from the group A and the other from the group B with the participation of the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Radio (Artistic Director Vladimir Fedoseyev).
