Vera Lotar-Shevchenko International Piano Competition will take place in Novosibirsk, December 1 - 14, 2008. The Jury will be composed of well-known musicians from Russia and France

  1. Order of application

  2. 1.1 The competition supposes two age categories: YOUTH (age below 18 inclusive) and BASIC (age over 19 years). Top age limit of the participants is not supposed.
    1.2 For application for participation in the competition it is necessary to fill in and send the applied questionnaire. The deadline of reception of the application forms for participation in the competition is September 20, 2008 (the date is determined by a dispatch postage stamp).
    The application should be sent to the address: Organizing committee of the international competition of pianists in memory of Vera Lothar-Schevchenko, Bolshaya Polyanka street, 23-3, Moscow, Russia, 119180. The following items should be applied to the application: Two glossy photos 13õ18 cm and one photo 4x6 cm (Please write the name and surname on the reverse side and do not attach the photo with pins or paper clips); photocopy of the passport or replacing document (the document must provide the date of birth); videocassette meeting the following requirements: - The record of excellent quality only, a professional recording is desirable,
    - Duration of record - till 35 minutes,
    - Solo record pieces only,
    • îne part of a classical sonata
    • îne virtuoso etude
    • îne composition of the French composer
    - Editing of record during the program not supposed,
    - PAL/SECAM or VHS NTSC video recording,
    - The videocassette marked by: the name, surname, names of pieces in order of their record, timing and date of record.
    The applicants for participation in youth competition should include into the preliminary listening program pieces selected from the program of rounds 1 and 2 of the competition, but no more than 20 minutes of record.
    1.3 The entrance fee ($100 US) is paid by the participants allowed to the first round in cash at registration after the arrival to the competition. The fee is paid in rubles by the exchange rate officially established by the Central bank of Russia on the date of registration. The participants of youth competition do not pay an entrance fee.
    1.4 A sanction about admission to participation is accepted on the basis of listening of video recordings of the applicants' performances and is announced by the Organizing committee not later than September 20, 2008. All persons allowed to participation in the competition will receive official invitation of the Organizing committee with indication of date of arrival to the competition.
    1.5 Any changes in the performance program should be reported by the applicant not later than September 20, 2008 and come under to obligatory approval of the Organizing committee. Later all changes in the participant program are supposed only in unusual cases with the jury consent.
    1.6 In case a candidate refuses participation in the competition, the documents, videocassette and entrance fee are not returned.

  3. Order of competition:

  4. 2.1 The youth competition consists of two rounds: performance of two solo programs. The main competition consists of three rounds: two solo programs and final listening with an orchestra.
    2.2 To the second round of the youth competition 6 participants will be allowed, 12 participants - to the main round, and - 6 participants - to the final round.
    2.3 The basic tests consist of three rounds: Performance of two solo programs and the final listening with an orchestra. All listenings are conducted publicly. All pieces should be executed by memory.
    2.4 Twelve participants will be allowed to the second round, and six participants will be allowed to the final round.
    2.5 The order of performances of the participants is determined by sortition and shall be preserved up to the end of the competition. All participants of the competition should be present at the information meeting taking place after sortition before the first round.
    2.6 The competition participants are obliged to stay in Novosibirsk during all time of participation in the competition.
    2.7 The winners of the competition are obliged to give a free performance in the final concert of the competition.
    2.8 The competition participants shall not receive any royalties both for performance at the competition, and for any further use of records and translations of these performances.
    The rights to audio and video recordings, and also TV translations of performances of the competition participants belong to the Organizing committee.
    • The opening of competition takes place on December 1, 2008.
    • The final listening of the competition will take place from December 12 till December 14. After termination of the final of the competition on the basis of performances of the participants in all three rounds the jury makes a decision on distribution of premiums of the competition. The common final concert and the reward ceremony of the winners take place on December 14, 2008.

  5. Financial arrangements

  6. 3.1 The participants should arrive to Novosibirsk on the dates specified by the Organizing committee in the invitation.
    3.2 After reception of the official invitation for participation in the competition from the Organizing committee the foreign participants should address the Russian consulate for visas.
    3.3 Each participant of the competition is granted free hotel accommodation and meals from the date of arrival to Novosibirsk, not earlier the target.
    The participants not allowed to the second round are able to stay in the hotel due to the Organizing committee no more than two days after termination of participation in the competition. The participants of the second round, not allowed to the final part, are able to stay in the hotel till the end of the competition due to the Organizing committee.
    3.4 The participants are granted an option of rehearsals in a class-room (not less than five hours per day) and one rehearsal before each round on the stage where the competition will take place.
    3.5 The organizing committee does not provide the participants of competition with any kind of insurance.
    3.6 The application signed by the person wishing to participate in the competition is an evidence of competition complete acceptance of the present conditions by the future participant.

  7. Prizes

  8. 4.1 The Organizing Committee for the Vera Lotar-Shevchenko International Piano Competition announces:
    • FIRST PRIZE in the Youth Competion USD 1500
    • SECOND PRIZE in the Youth Competion USD 1200
    • THIRD PRIZE in the Youth Competion USD 1000.
    • THE FIRST PRIZE in the Basic Competion USD 10 000
    • SECOND PRIZE in the Basic Competion USD 7 500
    • THIRD PRIZE in the Basic Competion USD 5 000

    4.2 The Jury has the option to divide the prizes between performers ex-aequo or to declare void any of them.
    4.3 The decisions of the Jury are not subject to any review.
    4.4 The prize money to the Competition laureates will be paid in Russian roubles equivalent in accordance with the exchange rate of the Central Bank of Russia on the date of payment with the income tax deduction.
    4.5 In the event of a controversy over the present Rules for the Vera Lotar-Shevchenko International Piano Competition, the Russian version will be considered as the only valid one.

Repertoire

Participants may perform compositions recorded on the preselection videotape. Only published works may be performed at the Competition

First Round of the Youth Competition

Total duration 25 minutes

  1. Ane One Prelude and Fuga of following authors: Bach (“The Well-Tempered Clavier”),Tchaikovsky (op.21), Taneev (op.29), Shostakovich ( 24 Preludes and fugues, op.87).
  2. One part of a sonata (sonata-allegro from) îr variations: Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert.
  3. Two masterly etudes, îne of them Chopin, the second at the choice of the participant: Liszt, Debussy, Rubinstein, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Prokofiev, Stravinsky.
  4. One of preludes Debussy.

Second Round of the Youth Competition

Total duration 30 minutes

  1. Romantic composition the western European composer: Liszt, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Frank, Mendelssohn, Grieg.
  2. One or several composition of the Russian composer: Tchaikovsky, Balakirev, Glazunov, Metner, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Prokofiev, Shostakovich (execution of parts of a sonata is possible).
  3. One composition of a French composer of IXI or XX century.
  4. One composition written after 1960 by the native applicat’s.

First round of the Competition

  • Total duration: 40-45 minutes, inducing pauses.
  • The programme and its design will be freely determined by the participant and must consist of works in various styles, including important works of the piano repertoire.
  • Participants may not perform works of their own composition

Second round of the Competition

  • Total duration: 55-60 minutes, inducing pauses. (Contestant may choose to make a break of 3-5 minutes within the performance).
  • The program must consist of compositions in various styles and from various periods, including two large-scale works or one large-scale and one shorter composition and one work composed after 1960.
  • Participants may perform works of their own composition.
  • Participants may not perform works performed during the first round of the Competition

Third Round. Final

The finalists shall perform successively two concertos for piano and orchestra, one from the group A and the other from the group B with the participation of the Symphony orchestra.

  1. Mozart. One of the concertos (except KV. 37, 39, 40, 41 and 107)
  2. Beethoven. Concerto No. 1 in C major, op. 15; Concerto No.2 in B flat major, op. 19; Concerto No.3 in C minor, op.37; Concerto No.4 in G major, op.58; Concerto No.5 in E flat major, op.73 "Emperor"

Group B:

  1. Chopin. Concerto No.l in E minor, op. 11
  2. Liszt. Concerto No.2 in A major
  3. Brahms. Concerto No.l in D minor, op. 15
  4. Saint-Saens. Concerto No.2 in G minor, op.22
  5. Grieg. Concerto in A minor
  6. Tchaikovsky. Concerto No.2 in G major, op.44
  7. Rachmaninov. Concerto No.l in F sharp minor, op.l
  8. Scriabin, Concerto in F sharp minor
  9. Prokofiev. Concerto No.3 in C major, op.26
  10. Ravel. Concerto in G major
